Product Introduction
  • Introducing Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin, a multifunctional iron-binding glycoprotein primarily found in mammalian milk and various bodily fluids, has garnered considerable attention in scientific research due to its diverse biological activities and potential applications. Lactoferrin is high in colostrum and milk, which was discovered in breast milk by scientists MONTREUIJ and JOHANSONB in 1960. Recent studies have shed light on its mechanisms of action, revealing its involvement in modulating the immune response and exerting antimicrobial effects. Lactoferrin plays a crucial role in innate immunity by sequestering iron, which is essential for bacterial growth, thereby limiting microbial proliferation.

Lactoferrin - Little Étoile

Lactoferrin Manufactured by Yangge Biotech helps regulate how well iron is absorbed into the body from the intestine. It also seems to protect against infections from bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The lactoferrin in breastmilk is thought to help protect breast-fed infants against infections. In addition, studies have shown that lactoferrin has the functions of broad-spectrum antibacterial, anti-viral infection and immunity enhancing.

  • Functions

Lactoferrin is an iron binding glycoprotein in transferrin, which is concentrated in human and mammalian milk and various secretory fluids. However, the content in colostrum is the highest. A small amount of lactoferrin is also contained in mammalian mucosal surface, tear, saliva, leukocyte particles, pancreatic juice, bile and intestinal fluid. It has a wide range of functions, including sterilization, bacteriostasis, anti-virus, immune regulation, promoting iron absorption and other unique physiological functions.

1. Antibacterial

It has been determined that lactoferrin is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic agent, which can inhibit Gram-negative bacteria requiring iron, such as coliform, Salmonella, etc; It can also inhibit Gram-positive bacteria. However, it basically does not inhibit bacteria with low iron demand, such as lactic acid bacteria.

2. Antiviral

Pioneer Biotech is the Lactoferrin Manufacturer. It is plays a great role in resisting viruses in the host, and can inhibit human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), cytomegalovirus, herpesvirus types 1 and 2, hepatitis C virus (HCV), influenza virus and so on.One explanation for the antiviral mechanism of lactoferrin is that lactoferrin can combine with virus and host cells, so as to block the combination between virus and host cells and protect the latter from the harm of virus.

3. Antioxidant

Excess oxygen free radicals in the body form lipid peroxide, which can damage cells and tissues. It is a sign of aging and disease. Lactoferrin can bind iron ions and block the lipid oxidation and survival transformation of oxygen free radicals caused by iron ions. All these can reduce the damage of free radicals to elastin in arterial wall, so as to prevent and treat atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

4. Regulate immune response

Lactoferrin can combine with lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages and other cells to play a variety of functions. Lactoferrin can induce humoral immune response, promote lymphocyte proliferation, regulate bone marrow cell production and reduce inflammation. At the same time, lactoferrin can kill pathogens by stimulating neutrophils to produce peroxides. Lactoferrin can induce the proliferation of intestinal mucosal cells and spleen cells and promote the maturation of intestinal immune system.

5. Inhibit the development of cancer.

Lactoferrin is an in vitro broad-spectrum antiviral substance of human and animal viruses based on DNA / RNA. Resistant to: herpes simplex virus type I and II, cytomegalovirus, human immune deficiency virus, hepatitis C virus, hantavirus, rotavirus, poliovirus type I, human respiratory syncytial virus and murine leukemia virus.

6. Regulate iron absorption

As an iron fortifier, the absorption effect of lactoferrin is much better than that of ferric sulfate. Lactoferrin has the ability to bind and transport iron. It can release iron after reaching the human intestine, which can enhance the actual absorption and bioavailability of iron.

7. Lactoferrin for the treatment of COVID‑19

Recently, American scientists have used artificial intelligence technology to screen dozens of drugs that can deal with COVID-19, including lactoferrin.

  • Uses for lactoferrin

1. Infant nutrition

is the primary market for practical lactoferrin applications.  However, other sectors make use of the nutritional and functional properties of this protein.

2. Lactoferrin is widely used as a dietary supplement.

In particular as an immunomodulator. Although its actions are not yet clearly understood, we do know that it boosts immune response. Two studies conducted on healthy volunteers showed that consuming cow’s milk-derived lactoferrin has positive immunomodulatory effects (depending on the initial profile of the volunteer's immune system). The results suggest that cow’s milk-derived lactoferrin may be used clinically to improve the immune status of patients and may even play a role in activating their immune response. Lactoferrin supplements currently being sold already contain a level of purity reaching 96%.

3. Lactoferrin is also used in the cosmetics sector

It can be found in a number of beauty products including make-up and hair, face and body care items. For instance, its antibacterial properties mean it’s a highly sought-after ingredient in cleansers. It is also used in hairspray formulas for hydrating and smoothing hair. Lactoferrin also stimulates skin metabolism and has an anti-ageing effect due to its antioxidant properties which capture free radicals.

4. The oral hygiene sector also makes use of lactoferrin

Lactoferrin has a strong affinity for iron, helping it to act as a bacteriostatic agent. It actually reduces the quantity of freely available ferric ions, inhibiting the development of certain bacteria and related problems such as bad breath, dental caries and tartar.

Method of Analysis of Lactoferrin

1. Method

Use HPLC instrument, detect the lactoferrin at 280nm with area normalization method.

2. Prepare of the material

2.1 Grade 1 water.

2.2 HPLC Acetonitrile.

2.3 0.9%NaCl solution

2.4 1% trifluoroacetic acid solution: take 1ml trifluoroacetic acid solution, dilute with grade 1 water to 100ml, go with 0.45μm filter membrane.

2.5 HPLC instrument with UV detector.

3. Chromatographic condition

3.1 The chromatographic column:

Alltech prosphere C4 300A(150 mmx4.6 mm),

Alltech All-guardTM Guard(7.5mm x4.6mm), or same function column.

3.2 Detect wavelength: 280nm.

3.3 Flow rate: 1.0ml/min.

3.4 Column Temperature: 35°C.

3.5 Injection Volume: 50μl.

4. Test steps

Take sample and lactoferrin standard reference 0.1g each, both add 10ml grade 1 water (or NaCl solution), and go through 0.45μm filter membrane, then we get the sample solution and the reference solution. Use 50μl each to test at 280nm, and make the same remaining time (about 10min). The main peak is the peak of Lactoferrin. Calculate all the peak area among the twice remaining time. The ratio of main peak area and all peak area is the lactoferrin assay out of the total protein.
